My name is Mary Gage Davis. I am eagerly returning to Opal School, after taking time off
to be with my two children, Lucius (4) and Lois (1). Since beginning my Opal journey in 2003, I have played a
variety of roles including teaching grades 1-5. This year I am excited to be Opal’s curriculum specialist,
working with all of the Opal Charter teachers and children. It’s so fun for me to now be working
with many younger siblings of children I taught in years past and getting to
know the many new faces and families of Opal school. Teaching at Opal school challenges
and excites me, it helps me to look at the world through a complex and fascinating lens, to find beauty
to ask questions, to contemplate big ideas and share stories.
The life of my family has been turned a bit upside down since last January, when we purchased and completely gutted our “new” early 1900’s house. In an effort to escape the construction chaos, the kids and I spent most of the summer adventuring outside of Portland. After a week reconnecting with old friends beneath the Beartooth Mountains in Montana, we traveled to childhood home in South Carolina. We spent over a month on the farm where I grew up surrounded by pastures, ponds, old oak trees, dirt roads and lots of cousins. It was truly magical to see my own children exploring so many of the places of my childhood and creating their own stories in this familiar and beloved place.
I feel so very fortunate to be sharing the gift of Opal with my son Lucius who enters the Museum School Early Kindergarten this year. I look forward to re-connecting with old friends and getting to know the new members of our community, both as a teacher and as a parent!
